Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
Location: Burlington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with Cardiac PCU experience to provide care in a 30-bed Cardiac Medical Progressive Care unit. The unit operates 24/7 with remote cardiac monitoring support. The role involves managing cardiac and respiratory patients with a focus on conditions such as congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, arrhythmias, and post-cardiac catheterization care.
Schedule
- 3x12 hour shifts, Days (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
- Weekend rotation and holidays as needed
- Staffing scheduled in 6-week blocks with self-assisted scheduling
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in Cardiac PCU or related specialty
- Previous Charge RN experience preferred but not required
- First-time travel nurses are welcome
Patient Ratios
- Typically 1:5 ratio
- 1:4 ratio when managing drips or BiPAP
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification preferred
- Pass/Fail EKG/Dysrhythmia exam required prior to start
- Other certifications may be preferred depending on unit
Required Skills and Competencies
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry monitoring on unit
- Pre/post cardiac catheterization care
- Peripheral and PICC line care and management
- Management and titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Procedural sedation administration
- Chest tube management (Emerson, Pleur-evac)
- External CPAP/BiPAP management
- Tracheostomy care
- Use of Rapid Response Teams preferred
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Patient Population Focus
- Cardiac patients including congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, arrhythmias, syncope, pacemaker placement
- Secondary focus on respiratory conditions such as COPD, pneumonia, and BiPAP management
Required Licensure
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina
- Primary source verification of license required within 30 days of start
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Social Security Card
- Background check within 60 days covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
- Education verification (Associate’s degree in nursing or higher required)
- Transcript or diploma as proof of highest education
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 40 days of start
- Immunizations and health documents including:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 6 months
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity or vaccination
- Hepatitis B titer or declination
- Varicella immunity or vaccination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
- Fit mask test (N95) completed within current calendar year
- Physical exam within 12 months (if applicable)
- References: 2 supervisory references required from recent assignments
- Employment application/resume with 7-year work history
- Work history verification for last 5 years
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be flexible with scheduling and adhere to a zero-tolerance policy for tardiness and unexcused absences
- Candidates must complete a Pass/Fail EKG exam prior to start
- Staff are supported by nurse assistants 24/7 and an RN secretary during day shifts
- Orientation and onboarding tasks must be completed prior to start
- Facility has strict photo requirements for badges (no selfies, group photos, or altered backgrounds)
Prior Travel Experience
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are welcome
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Medication Administration Badge (MAB)
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Proficient in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Experience with telemetry monitoring on the unit
- Skilled in pre- and post-cardiac catheterization care
- PICC line management experience
- Ability to manage cardiac drips (without titration)
- Procedural sedation administration experience
- Ability to titrate cardiac drips
- Ability to titrate vasoactive drips
- Chest tube management experience (Emerson, Pleur-evac)
- Experience managing external CPAP and BiPAP devices
