Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Position: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
- Patient Ratios: 1:5
- Experience Required: 2 years (higher end of 1 to 2 years range)
- First-time travelers accepted
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
- Charge RN and holiday shifts as needed
- Float Pool Position: No home unit; float between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU units and other metro campuses as needed
- On-call: Not required
- Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending license not accepted
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Preferred Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
Required Skills and Experience
- Work settings: Med/Surg Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, Neuro Stepdown
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, telemetry monitoring
- Cardiovascular care: Pre/Post Cardiac Catheterization
- Experience with sepsis, wound care, alcohol withdrawal, suicidal ideation, renal failure, atrial fibrillation, gastrointestinal bleeding, stroke, COVID-19
- Ability to float within scope across multiple units
Preferred Skills
- Cardiovascular: Sheath removal
- Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy/phlebotomy: Accessing ports, blood product administration, central line care/management
Special Requirements
- Virtual nursing capabilities
- Proficiency with 12-lead EKG, AirVo, Voalte communication system, Omnicell medication system
Required Background and Compliance
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
- Primary source verification of professional nursing license required
- NURSYS verification required for Missouri licenses
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel of substances
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
- TB testing (2 negative PPDs or equivalent)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Various facility-specific compliance documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code, and regulatory education must be completed and signed prior to start
Additional Requirements
- Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required annually
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application must be submitted and approved prior to start
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Kansas
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience managing dysrhythmias
- Experience with pre/post cardiac catheterization care
- Sepsis management experience
- Experience with virtual nursing
Summary
This is a travel contract RN position in a Progressive Care Unit requiring at least 2 years of nursing experience. The role involves floating across multiple med/surg and telemetry units with a focus on cardiac and neurological patient care. Certifications in BLS and NIHSS are mandatory, with ACLS preferred. Candidates must be willing to work weekends and holiday shifts, and must meet extensive background, health, and compliance requirements. Prior travel experience is not required.
