Registered Nurse - ICU

Location: Alton, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Unit: ICU with an average daily census of 8 patients, 12 beds total
  • Patient Population: Stroke only, cardiac patients (cardiovert, pacemaker), no open heart surgeries
  • High population of overdose cases
  • Patient Age Group: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Float required to MS/Tele, medical, surgical unit, intermediate care
  • Nurse to patient ratio: MS/Tele, Medical, Surgical 1:5-6
  • 8 bed step-down unit (not always open)
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details: central line placement, bronchoscopy, PEG tube care
  • Skills Required: Ventilator management, IV start, telemetry monitoring
  • Must be willing to work holidays and weekends as needed
  • Unit accepts first-time travelers

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
  • Experience with ventilator management

Compliance and Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Illinois fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • Professional license primary source verification and NURSYS verification required
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include standard panels and be current throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Additional facility-specific compliance documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene policy, dress code policy, and regulatory compliance education must be completed and signed prior to start

Additional Information

  • References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
  • Skills checklist specific to unit required within 1 year of start
  • Orientation modules required for all RNs, completed through online training platform
  • May be required to float to other units as needed

  • Float to multiple units including medical, surgical, telemetry, and intermediate care
  • 1:5-6 nurse to patient ratio on medical/surgical/telemetry units
