Job Opportunity: MedSurgical Float Pool Nurse

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Description

• Provide high-quality nursing care in a MedSurgical setting.
• Flexibility to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity as needed.
• Work schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), totaling 36 hours/week.
• Availability required for weekdays, some weekends, and holidays.
• Manage patient ratios of approximately 1:4-5.
• Strong communication, teamwork, organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
• Minimum of 2 years of MedSurgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Experience in an inpatient setting.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• Proficiency in telemetry monitoring.
• Experience with Epic electronic health records system.

Certifications & Competencies

• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA provider or instructor accepted.
• Unit-specific competency exams required.
• Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
• Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
• Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP) — verify per unit.

Background & Compliance Requirements

• 7-year criminal background check including FBI and state (BCI) fingerprinting required prior to start.
• Fingerprinting must be completed using specific state codes and within 1 year of assignment start.
• Education accreditation verification required for nursing degree (accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
• Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed).
• Physical exam documentation within 1 year confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
• Immunizations and health screenings required:

  • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
  • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
• COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.

Additional Requirements

• Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
• Employment application and skills checklist must be completed.
• Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
• Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
• Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.

Work Environment

• Float pool nurse role with flexibility to work across multiple MedSurgical units.
• Night shift hours with some weekend and holiday coverage.
• Patient acuity varies; ability to adapt to different unit needs is essential.
