Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU/Neuro Stepdown

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

Seeking a Registered Nurse for Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Neuro Stepdown. Neuro experience is preferred but candidates with strong general medicine or surgical experience will also be considered.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Work Details

  • Floating to Med/Surg, Neuro, Stepdown, PCU units
  • Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend
  • Blocked scheduling: Not available
  • On-call: Not required
  • First-time travel nurses are welcome
  • Local candidates within 75 miles considered (with adjusted pay)
  • Orientation sessions held bi-weekly
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid government-issued photo ID and Social Security card (if used for I9)
  • Background checks including:
    • Criminal history (all counties lived/worked/attended school in past 7 years)
    • SSN trace, alias searches, sex offender, international searches (if applicable)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 90 days of start
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma as applicable
  • Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (vaccines or positive titers; no exemptions)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal)
    • Polio vaccine or attestation
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months (with documentation for positive history)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Completion of required competency exams and unit-specific training
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training provided during orientation (valid for 2 years)
  • Completion of online orientation modules prior to start
  • Setup of facility guest account prior to clearance

References & History

  • Two professional references required from employment within the last 12 months; at least one must be a supervisor
  • Employment application with 7 years of work history required
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete all required documentation and clearances prior to start date
  • Flu vaccine is mandatory with no exemptions allowed; refusal will result in contract cancellation
  • Candidate must confirm setup of facility guest account before clearance
  • Orientation and onboarding details will be provided prior to start

This position is suitable for both first-time travel nurses and local candidates with the required qualifications and experience.
