Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Intermediate Intensive Care (IMC/IICU)

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with critical care experience for an Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU) / Intermediate Medical Care (IMC) setting. The unit cares for adult patients including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases requiring frequent monitoring and interventions. Patient acuity ratio is approximately 1:3.


Required Experience

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Intermediate Care experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
  • One completed travel assignment
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Medication management skills including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Schedule & Floating

  • Weekend shifts: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
  • Floating to other units or campuses may be required, limited to qualified areas with documented competencies.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active South Carolina or multistate RN license required (no pending licenses accepted).
  • Required certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification (as applicable)
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., TNCC, ENPC, PALS, NRP).

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Adult patients with trauma, medical, surgical, and neurological conditions.
  • Unit receives direct admissions, ICU transfers, and rapid response escalations.
  • Equipment includes patient repositioners, ceiling lifts, and Airtaps.

Skills & Competencies

  • Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia management.
  • Emergency response and telemetry monitoring.
  • Ventilator management.
  • Medication titration for cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • EPIC electronic health record proficiency (minimum 1 year).
  • Ability to work in a high-acuity environment with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Background checks including 7-year history and various federal/state screenings.
  • Drug screening within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands.
  • Immunizations and health screenings including TB, Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, and seasonal flu vaccination or exemption.
  • Completion of online orientation modules and pre-assignment testing within 72 hours of assignment.
  • Badge photo submission required.
  • Floating policy acknowledgment.
  • Medication and arrhythmia competency testing may be required.

Additional Notes

  • Facility is a Level I Adult Trauma Center with Magnet recognition for nursing excellence.
  • Staff are expected to comply with facility policies including call-off limits and scheduling requests.
  • Candidates must be prepared for a fast-paced, critical care environment with diverse patient needs.

This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs with prior travel experience seeking a challenging and rewarding travel assignment in South Carolina.
