Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Targeted patient ratios: typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6
- Shift options: 36 or 48 hours per week
- Overtime paid after 48 hours on 48-hour contracts
- Floating required: may float within specialty clusters and to nearby campuses (within ~15 miles)
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
- Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts or contract with notice
- Travel experience preferred but not required
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience, with PCU experience within the last year
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- Experience with stable chronic ventilators preferred
- Must pass an online EKG tele competency assessment before starting
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- National Tech Certification Verification

- Current Ohio RN license (primary source verification required)
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) but not specified as mandatory for this role
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required within 1 year prior to start or must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max to pass)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 2 years of start
- Unit-specific competency exams required within 2 years prior to start
Health & Background Requirements
- Physical exam within 2 years, indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray (with annual questionnaire if past positive)
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, titer, or declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Drug screening: negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 12 months prior to documentation due date, including marijuana panel
- Respiratory safety clearance required within 1 year of start and renewed annually
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required
- Fingerprinting not required unless working in specific units (not applicable here)
Documentation & Onboarding
- Must submit I-9, government-issued photo ID, and E-Verify attestation prior to start
- Must complete medical questionnaire for respiratory protection prior to orientation
- Required to provide 2 professional references from within 2 years (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse) or employment verification if references unavailable
- Current resume/application required
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date
Additional Notes
- Traveler will be first to float as needed
- Travel experience preferred but not mandatory
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with variable patient ratios
- Not eligible for employee incentives of the employer
