Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a focus on neuroscience and high-risk respiratory patients. This is an intermediate care unit with mixed acuity including med-surg and intermediate care patients. The unit currently functions as a high-risk respiratory unit and will return to a neuro intermediate care unit as COVID patient numbers decrease.
Unit Details
- 36-bed Neuroscience/High-Risk Respiratory Unit
- Patient population includes cerebrovascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), seizures, and other neuro conditions
- Use of heated high flow oxygen and BiPAPs
- Targeted patient ratios: 1:4-6
- Team nursing model with RNs, LPNs, and PCTs partnering to care for groups of patients
- Floating may include Neuro ICU and other specialty clusters
- Nurses wear navy blue scrubs
Required Experience & Skills
- Must have 1:5 ratio experience in PCU or Step-Down (SD) units (ICU experience does NOT count toward this)
- Ventilator experience required
- EPIC electronic health record experience required
- Pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting
- BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Certification required
- IV start preferred
- Travel experience preferred (not mandatory)
Schedule & Other Requirements
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
- Floating assignments at employer’s discretion, including other campuses within 15 miles
- Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts or contracts with notice
- Overtime paid after 48 hours worked
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Ohio RN license (primary source verification required)
- BLS (AHA only)
- ACLS (AHA only)
- NIH Stroke Certification (updated annually, required within 12 months prior to start)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must pass with 80% or higher; remediation process applies)
- Other certifications as applicable (e.g., Medication/Pharmacology competency exam)
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for duty
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray (annual questionnaire if past positive)
- Drug screening (9 or 10 panel including marijuana) within 12 months prior to start
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season
- Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year of start
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Employment application and current resume required
- Two professional references within 2 years (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge RN) or employment verification if references unavailable
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to start
- Proof of government-issued photo ID
- I-9 and E-Verify compliance
Additional Notes
- Must submit application showing required PCU/SD experience to avoid delays
- Floating assignments may include high-risk respiratory and COVID units
- Travel experience is preferred but not strictly required
- Nurses will be assigned a buddy when floating to Neuro ICU
- Must complete all required competency exams and certifications prior to start
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
