Job Opportunity: Medical Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse - Nights

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (36 hours per week), every other weekend
  • On-call: None
  • Patient Ratios: Approximately 1:1 to 1:2

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Medical ICU experience (highest required years of experience)
  • Prior travel nursing experience is preferred, but not required

Required Certifications

  • BCLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA certified only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA certified only
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • All certifications must be current and AHA-approved (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable)

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in IV starts
  • Experience with telemetry monitoring
  • Competency with ventilators
  • Proficiency in EPIC documentation system (required)
  • Ability to manage complex critical care patients with conditions such as:
    • Multisystem Organ Failure
    • Respiratory Failure
    • COVID-19
    • Sepsis
    • Post-Cardiac Arrest care
    • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
    • Liver and Renal Failure

Specialized Procedures and Equipment Knowledge

  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring for hyperglycemia
  • Externalized IV Pumps for COVID+ patients
  • Familiarity with:
    • NxStage CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy)
    • Alaris IV Pump
    • GE Cardiac Monitor
    • GE Ventilator
    • Boom Lift in each patient room

License Requirement

  • Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Ohio

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (must be completed within 90 days of start)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies
  • Completion of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate prior to start and annually thereafter

Competency Exams and Training

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exams required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if failed)
  • NIH Stroke Certification required within 1 year of start and renewed every 2 years (specific to certain units)

References and Documentation

  • Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership role
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Facility uses EPIC electronic health record system exclusively
  • Candidates must be prepared to comply with all facility-specific policies and credentialing requirements prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced Medical ICU RNs seeking a travel contract opportunity with a focus on critical care nursing in a high-acuity environment.
