Unit Details

• Unit Type: Medical-Surgical (MedSurg)
• Number of Beds: 48
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:5-7
  • Night shift: 1:6-8
• Charge Nurse Coverage:

  • Day shift: 2 charge nurses, both take patient assignments
  • Night shift: 2 charge nurses scheduled; if only 1 charge nurse, they do not take patient assignments
• Patient Care Tech (PCT) Ratio: Approximately 1:10-12 (can be higher)
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness

Job Duties

• Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors
• Bathing, feeding, toileting, turning and positioning patients
• Titration of drips allowed with exceptions (no cardiac drip titration)
• Common drips: heparin, bumex, lasix

Respiratory Therapy Support

• Respiratory Therapists (RT) handle breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manage respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2)
• RNs monitor respiratory equipment but are not required to perform respiratory treatments

Telemetry

• Telemetry monitoring techs read and monitor all telemetry strips
• Nurses are not required to interpret telemetry strips

Scheduling & Shifts

• RN Shifts: 7 AM to 7 PM (12-hour shifts), rotating day/night shifts
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: May be asked to participate in holiday rotation
• No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule managed by manager with consideration for requested time off
• Travelers expected to be flexible and assist with schedule gaps

Floating

• May float to other Medical-Surgical units, Medical-Surgical Telemetry, or Intermediate Care for lower acuity patients

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation includes:

  • 1 day with educator/computer system training
  • 1 day preceptor shift

Dress Code

• RN Scrubs: Navy blue

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Current RN license
• BLS certification

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience
• First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)
