Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Orthopedic

Location: Dayton, Ohio

Job Description

• Work schedule options: 36 or 48 hours per week (OT paid after 48 hours for 48-hour contracts)
• Unit uses a team nursing model where RNs, LPNs, and PCTs collaborate to care for a group of patients. Nurses may function in team nursing or primary nursing depending on unit needs.
• Patient population includes medical surgical orthopedic patients, commonly traumatic hip fractures, elective spine surgeries, and other traumatic orthopedic injuries.
• Care involves pre/post-surgical orthopedic care including heart monitors, drains, PCA pumps, and Ketamine drips. Also provides care to med-surg patients and overflow.
• Unit size: 23 beds, working with telemetry and drips.
• Scrub color: Navy Blue
• Floating: Travelers may float to other specialty clusters or units including high-risk respiratory/COVID units. Floating assignments may include nearby campuses within 15 miles.
• Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
• Minimum 1.5 years of orthopedic nursing experience, with orthopedic experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• EKG competency
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system
• Ability to float to other units as needed
• Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays

Certifications & Competencies

• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
• NIH Stroke Certification (updated annually)
• Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (3 attempts max, 80% passing score)
• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (within 2 years)
• Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment

Health & Background Requirements

• Physical exam within 2 years, indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray (annual update if past positive TB)
• Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
• Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 12 months prior to documentation due date, including marijuana panel
• Background checks including 7-year criminal background check, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
• Fingerprinting not required for this assignment unless working in specific units (not applicable here)
• Medical questionnaire for respiratory protection clearance required prior to orientation
• Annual health questionnaire required

• Two professional references within 2 years (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge RN) or employment verification if references unavailable
• Skills checklist within 1 year, updated annually
• Ohio RN license primary source verification (NURSYS)
• I-9 and E-Verify documentation
• Government issued photo ID
• Proof of name change if applicable
• Candidate agreement fully completed prior to documentation due date

Additional Notes

• Traveler will be first to float at employer’s discretion and may be assigned to medically appropriate units.
• Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts or contracts with notice and is not responsible for employee incentives.
• Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer. Approval is at manager’s discretion.

Prior Travel Experience
