Registered Nurse - Memory Care / Long Term Care

Location: Augusta, Maine
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a 13-week travel contract in a long-term care setting specializing in memory care. The unit primarily cares for patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's, deconditioned rehab patients, and a small number of comfort care beds.


Patient Population

  • Moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease
  • Deconditioned rehabilitation
  • Comfort care (limited staffing by travelers)

Staffing Ratios & Environment

  • RN/LPN ratio: 1:38 (days and nights, low acuity)
  • CNA ratio: Days 1:9, Nights 1:19
  • Typically 2 nurses per hall ("Neighborhood") with 5-6 CNAs per hall
  • Currently experiencing staffing shortages due to a COVID outbreak

Typical Duties

  • Approximately 14-17 admissions per month, rare discharges
  • Patient rounding and documentation
  • Administering certain medications including narcotics (med aides do not pass narcotics)
  • Diabetic and fall assessments, monthly assessments
  • Managing CNAs and coordinating with all staff during meals due to high dysphagia acuity
  • Rarely performing treatments; nurses handle oxygen therapy and occasional nebulizers or metered dose inhalers

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • 12-hour shifts (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday rotation with permanent staff
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating within neighborhoods and occasionally to comfort care units
  • Scrub dress code: Any clean, professional color; no logos or camouflage
  • Orientation: 2 days EMR training, 2 days unit training (more if needed)
  • COVID precautions: N95 masks required; COVID vaccine required by state mandate

Required Qualifications

  • Active Maine RN license
  • BLS certification
  • Minimum 1 year of previous long-term care experience

Team & Support

  • Interdisciplinary team includes PT/OT/SLP, case managers, social workers, and dieticians
  • Managers and supervisors available by phone
  • Physician available after hours by call
  • No respiratory therapist on-site 24/7; nurses provide oxygen therapy and treatments

  • Facility has approximately 120 beds/residents
