Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: 8-week Neuro/General Surgery Unit, 24-bed acute care neuroscience-focused with surgical and general medicine patients
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4 or 1:5 depending on staffing
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: 3-4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Floating: Clinician may float within scope to meet unit needs
  • Holiday rotation required
  • Guaranteed hours with allowance for 1 shift call-off every 2 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical Surgical (Med Surg) nursing experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Schedule Flexibility

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval, depending on unit needs
  • Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis

Important Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
  • Facility uses EPIC for charting
  • During hurricane season (June–November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
  • Parking permit required with a registration fee; additional parking fees may apply outside designated garage

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation)
  • Valid driver’s license/state ID
  • Social Security card or number verification
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification for the past 7 years
  • Education verification (diploma/transcripts preferred)
  • NURSYS license verification (for RNs)
  • Drug screening (10-panel urine test within 90 days)
  • Annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 90 days
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (titer or vaccination)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (titer or vaccination)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination records preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Color blindness test prior to start
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
  • Competency exam for applicable units
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge

Additional Requirements

  • Proof of 2 clinical references
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, and agency names with no unaccounted gaps
  • Radiation badge may be required depending on unit assignment (not typical for this role)

Summary

This is a 13-week travel contract for a Registered Nurse position on a neuroscience/general surgery acute care unit with night shifts and weekend requirements. Candidates must have at least 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year, hold a valid South Carolina RN license, and possess BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. TNCC and NIHSS certifications are required. An Associate Degree in Nursing is also required. The role requires flexibility for holiday and weekend shifts, and compliance with extensive health, background, and credentialing requirements. Prior travel experience is not required.
