Job Description
- Provide nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for patients in a fast-paced outpatient clinic supporting multiple specialties including medical oncology, gastroenterology, and urology.
- Manage approximately 8-10 patients per day outpatient, with occasional inpatient coverage on general medical-surgical floors and stem cell/bone marrow transplant units when inpatient dietitian is unavailable or during on-call.
- Inpatient census averages 25-28 patients daily with 5-7 inpatient consults per day.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing staff, pharmacy, and other healthcare team members to develop and implement nutritional care plans.
- Document all nutrition care information thoroughly in patient medical records using EPIC.
- Counsel and educate patients, families, and healthcare staff on nutritional support and management.
- Monitor foodservice operations to ensure compliance with diet orders and quality standards.
- Participate in hospital-wide quality assurance and infection control programs.
- Utilize telemedicine and other nutritional services as needed for patient care.
- On-call duties required, rotating up to every other weekend; on-call shifts are remote (computer/phone based).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) license in Arizona.
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with a minimum of 1 year of experience as a Dietitian, including experience within the last year.
- RD or RDN credential required.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Adult outpatient/clinic experience.
- Skilled nursing facility (SNF) experience.
- Knowledge of conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, elevated cholesterol/triglycerides, heart failure, diabetes (including diabetic ketoacidosis), abdominal wounds and surgeries, chronic diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, hyperemesis, IBS, post-op gastric bypass, short gut syndrome, kidney disease (acute/chronic), acid/base balance, blood glucose/A1C, lipid panel, and related pharmacology (pressors, diuretics, immunosuppressants, insulin, laxatives, steroids).
- Experience with radiation effects, dysphagia, mucositis, stomatitis, appetite stimulants, aspiration safety, calorie counts, enteral nutrition (tube feedings), fluid balance, food-drug interactions and timing, intake and output monitoring, nutrition therapy complications, oral rehydration solutions, therapeutic diet orders, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), fluid status assessment, cachexia, cancer, chronic wounds, development of treatment plans, dietary guidelines, failure to thrive, fluid/electrolyte requirements, malabsorption syndromes, marasmus, metabolic demands, nutrient deficiencies, nutrition assessments/reassessments, Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (NFPE), protein calorie malnutrition, and refeeding syndrome.
Orientation and Onboarding Requirements
- 40 hours of orientation (may be extended as needed).
- Background checks including social security trace, education verification, and national databases.
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Various certifications may be required based on unit/specialty, including ACLS, BLS, and PALS.
- Annual competency exams and safety manual acknowledgements.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months.
- Immunizations and health screenings including Tdap, TB testing, MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, flu vaccination or exemption, COVID vaccination or exemption, and drug screening.
- Facility is 100% nicotine free.
- Confidentiality agreement and other facility-specific documents required.
Additional Information
- Scrubs (eggplant color) are required but not provided.
- On-call shifts are remote and phone/computer based.
- Collaborative, team-focused environment with teaching physicians.
This position is ideal for a Registered Dietitian seeking a travel contract role with diverse clinical exposure in oncology and specialty outpatient and inpatient settings.
