Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Tyler, Texas
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with an orthopedic specialty for a travel contract position. The role involves caring for patients in a 36-bed unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6. Nurses must be willing to float to units of equal or lesser acuity. Weekend shifts will comprise half of the scheduled shifts.
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of orthopedic nursing experience
- First-time travelers are not accepted (prior travel experience required)
Patient Care & Skills
- Med/surg, MS/Telemetry
- Colostomy care, feeding tube management
- Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- Accessing ports, blood product administration
- Central line blood draws, peripheral line management, phlebotomy
- PICC line management, IV starts, Heparin administration
- PCA, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury care
- Ortho trauma, total joint replacements, surgical drains
- High flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oral suctioning
- Oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
- Tracheostomy management, wound care
Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Texas required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred
- NIH Stroke Certification preferred
- Other certifications as applicable: PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, CPI, MAB
Documentation & Systems
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system required
Additional Requirements
- Must not reside in certain local counties (specific counties excluded)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 1 year of start, renewed annually
- Required immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination)
- Hepatitis B (positive titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or documented history)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Background checks including 7-year history, education verification, and federal exclusions
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross: ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP
- CHEMO, TNCC, CPI, MAB certifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- National Technical Certification verification
- Proficient in feeding tube management, pre/post hemodialysis care, and renal failure management
- Skilled in central line blood draws and phlebotomy
- Experience with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injury care
- Knowledge and experience in ortho trauma and total joint replacements
- Competent in use of oxygen face masks
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Work Conditions
- Float to units of equal or lesser acuity required
- Weekend shifts comprise half of scheduled shifts
Notes
- Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be considered
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6
