Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (OR RN)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • On-Call: Up to 4 call shifts per month (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Schedule: As needed, including 1 weekend shift per month (Saturday or Sunday, 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Holiday Work: Required to work at least one holiday period (Christmas and New Year's)
  • Floating: Must float within scope to meet unit/facility needs between like units

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • Main Operating Room with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Charting system: EPIC

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) RN experience, including OR experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Radiation Badge
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • May require manager approval for block scheduling
  • Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
  • Parking available with a permit and registration fee

Important Notes

  • During hurricane season (June–November, peak in August and September), all staff including travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams
  • Must be willing to complete required orientation modules and facility-specific training prior to start
  • Must provide a clear, passport-style photo for badge issuance before start date

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of 2 clinical references
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification for last 7 years
  • Education verification (diploma or transcripts preferred)
  • Primary source license verification (active, unencumbered)
  • NURSYS verification for RN license
  • Annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccinations
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccination series or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days prior to start
  • Radiation badge process required before starting clinical work in OR

Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS certification may be required depending on unit (confirm with recruiter)
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) recommended but not required for ER RNs
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Other certifications as applicable based on unit assignment

Additional Information

  • Travelers must upload COVID vaccination records or complete a vaccination declination form
  • Orientation modules must be completed before starting; failure to complete will result in being sent home
  • Radiation badge may take 5-7 days to process; candidates cannot start floor duties without it
  • Must be willing to float to other like units as needed

This position is ideal for experienced OR Registered Nurses seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic and supportive nursing team.
