Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse

Location: Lexington, Kentucky
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work 4 weekend shifts per month (Friday or Saturday night)
  • Strong Neuro experience required
  • Prior travel experience required
  • Required skills and experience include:
    • Airway management
    • Management of vented patients
    • Arterial line management (preferred for ER)
    • Management of dysrhythmias
    • Central line management
    • Management of IV drips
    • Isolation precautions
    • Triage skills (ER/ER Holding only)
    • Computerized documentation
    • Nurse to patient ratios 1:1 to 1:2+
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • Interpretation of ABGs and dysrhythmias
    • Continuous IV sedation
    • Titration of IV vasopressors
    • Management of patients with multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
    • Experience with femoral-popliteal bypasses (fempops), carotid endarterectomies (CEAs), post thoracic surgeries, post craniotomies, and neurosurgeries
  • Minimum 1.5+ years of recent ICU experience

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • NIH Stroke Certification (must be current within 1 year)
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification (as applicable)
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license
  • Pass/Fail EKG test required for ICU/Tele/Med Surg-Tele units
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Kentucky
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1.5 years of ICU nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Previous travel experience
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) proficiency
  • Thoracic surgery experience
  • Neurosurgery experience

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (not required annually)
  • Fit mask test (annual)
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years (declination acceptable for non-clinical only)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (annual update required)
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or titer required (declinations not accepted)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination required
  • Varicella vaccination or titer required (declinations not accepted)
  • Negative 9-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption required

Background & Documentation

  • 7-year criminal background check required, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Education verification required matching specialty; diploma or transcript acceptable if verification unavailable
  • Two professional references required (one for non-clinical)
  • Employment application required
  • Skills checklist and competency exams required and must be updated annually (not required for non-clinical)
  • Photo for badge required (clear, unedited, solid background)

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must provide a current Driver’s License if driving is a job responsibility
  • Some units may require additional certifications or competencies based on specialty and assignment
  • Orientation includes EPIC and Accucheck training before competency testing

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong neuro skills and prior travel experience looking for a weekend-focused contract in Kentucky.
