Job Opportunity: Medical Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse - Nights

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (36 hours total)
  • Every other weekend
  • No on-call required

Patient Ratios

  • Estimated 1:1 to 1:2

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Medical ICU experience (higher value confirmed)
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required

Required Certifications

  • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA certifications only
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills

  • Proficient in IV starts
  • Experience with telemetry (Tele) monitoring
  • Competency with ventilators

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous travel nursing experience preferred
  • Proficiency in EPIC documentation system

Specialized Clinical Experience

  • Multisystem Organ Failure
  • Respiratory Failure

Special Procedures / Unit Details

  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Hyperglycemia
  • Use of Externalized IV Pumps for COVID+ patients

Equipment Knowledge

  • NxStage Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) machine
  • Alaris IV Pump
  • GE Cardiac Monitor
  • GE Ventilator
  • Boom Lift in each patient room

Required Background Checks & Compliance

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Transcript or diploma verification as applicable
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) vaccine after age 11/12
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Required Competencies & Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if failed)

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application required including education verification
  • Skills checklist required

  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually

Summary

This is a travel contract position for an experienced Medical ICU Registered Nurse working night shifts in a high-acuity environment. The role requires strong critical care skills, proficiency with EPIC, ventilators, telemetry, and specialized equipment. Candidates must meet rigorous background, health, and competency requirements. Prior travel nursing experience is preferred but not mandatory.


Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
