Registered Nurse (RN) - Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) with 30 beds (14 private, 16 semi-private)
- Patient ratios goal: 1:4, typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
- EMR system: Sunrise
- Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden
- Respiratory equipment managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT) 24/7
- Hospitalist and Intensivist coverage 24/7
- IV team available 24/7 (IV team performs all IV starts)
- Pharmacy available 24/7 with Pyxis system
- Respiratory Therapists in-house 24/7
Shift Details
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM
- Must be ready to start by 6:45 AM/PM
- Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
- Weekend shifts required:
- Nights: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Days: 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule, but no true straight day shifts; minimum 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule required for day shift workers
- Floating required to Telemetry or MedSurg units as needed (ratios up to 1:6 or 1:7 in MedSurg, rarely)
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Chest pain, rule out MI, congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Arrhythmias, post pacemaker care
- Pre/post cardiac catheterizations (manage radial bands and groin checks; do not pull sheaths)
- Overflow patients requiring intermediate care acuity
- Tikosyn therapy management
- Rarely manage chest tubes
Required Certifications & Skills
- Current RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently (Tele Techs available but RN must interpret)
- Ability to titrate drips including: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Must be able to work within a 50-mile radius rule
- Must provide an unexpired driver’s license upon submission
Orientation
- First day: Approximately 4 hours with HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
- Second day: On unit with preceptor
- After orientation, nurse works independently
Additional Information
- Charge nurses take full patient assignments on both day and night shifts
- Clinical assistants work alongside nursing staff with patient assignments and office duties
- Nurse aides (CNA) support with ratios of 1:10-12
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs (top, bottom, and jackets), no hoodies
- Flexibility required for holiday shifts, though holidays are typically covered by permanent staff
