Job Description

• Work on a mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients.
• Unit has approximately 24 PCU beds and 24 Medical-Surgical Telemetry beds.
• Patient population includes a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers; high acuity.
• Pediatric patients are rarely cared for on this unit; pediatric experience is NOT required.
• Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Schedule

• Self-scheduling requests are accepted before final schedule posting.
• Orientation:

  • Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
  • Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
• Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments may vary based on staffing needs and are reviewed every 4 weeks.

Equipment and Procedures

• Use of B450 monitors with GE telemetry system.
• Bladder Scanner, Alaris pumps, Continuous Bladder Irrigation, and PCA pumps.
• Chemotherapy competence is not required but training is available through a 2-day chemo course if interested.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
• Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Oncology experience.

Background and Compliance Requirements

• 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
• Education must be from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
• State license verification required within 30 days of start.
• Various monthly and annual background and compliance checks as per policy.

Certifications and Competencies

• Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA approved.
• Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
• Unit-specific competency exams required.
• Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
• Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS after 11/13/25 for certain units).

Health and Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
• Required immunizations or titers:

  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer).
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer unless medically exempt).
  • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12, Tdap required).
• Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed).
• Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
• COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
