Description

Registered Nurse - Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Summary

  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts (days, nights, or combination) based on department needs.
  • Patient population primarily includes oncology patients with soft tissue malignancies receiving chemotherapy, diagnostic services, symptom management, and comorbidity management.
  • Continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy administration.
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Oncology experience.
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias.
  • Ability to float to units of equivalent or lower acuity.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:4.

Clinical Skills Required

  • Accessing ports.
  • Arterial line management.
  • Central line care and management.
  • PICC line management.
  • Assist with chest tube insertion and removal.
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required depending on unit.
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam).

Equipment Used

  • GE telemetry system (B450 monitors).
  • Bladder scanner.
  • Alaris infusion pumps.
  • Stryker beds.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program required.
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 3 months of start required.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose).
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers.
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer.
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season.
  • Physical exam within 1 year stating good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.

Additional Requirements

  • Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams may be required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Arterial line management
  • Central line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Assist with chest tube insertion and removal
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Notes

  • Shift assignments are reviewed every 4 weeks but are subject to change based on staffing needs.
  • Candidates must be flexible to float within units of similar or lower acuity.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology med-surg setting with a focus on telemetry and complex patient care needs.
