Description

Registered Nurse – Birthing Center / Mother Baby

Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Birthing Center with 6 "homelike" L&D suites (private bathrooms and showers)
  • No triage beds; unscheduled patients seen in a 4-bed OB Emergency Department within OB Department
  • Mother Baby/Postpartum area includes 11 private rooms
  • Approximately 1,050 births per year; 3,000 OB ED and outpatient visits annually

Patient Care & Common Diagnoses

  • Care for high-risk pregnancies; NICU accommodates babies from 25 weeks gestation
  • Level III NICU not currently available onsite; transfers to higher level NICU as needed
  • No Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist onsite, but total medical capabilities with referral options
  • Designated Baby-Friendly birth facility with advanced perinatal care certification
  • Certified National Safe Sleep Hospital with infant security system and lactation consultants
  • Family-centered care approach

Shift & Scheduling

  • All shifts are 12 hours: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday participation required
  • Travelers are not eligible for call but may pick up open shifts

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurse on each side 24/7 who also takes patient assignments
  • OB techs circulate and assist with recovery and transfers to postpartum
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7
  • Pharmacy services available 24/7 with automated medication dispensing
  • No dedicated IV team
  • Telemetry monitoring available on the unit

Orientation & Floating

  • One shift of onboarding orientation plus one 12-hour precepted floor orientation shift
  • Cross-coverage between units expected

Required Certifications

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) verification

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience required
  • C-section experience required; must be able to circulate and recover patients
  • L&D experience preferred at 2 years; Mother Baby experience acceptable at 1 year
  • First-time travelers are acceptable

Nurse Attire

  • Scrubs provided for Labor & Delivery (color: provided)
  • Navy scrubs for Mother Baby unit

Note: This position requires a valid nursing license appropriate for the state of West Virginia.
