Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - CVOR

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must independently scrub cardiac surgery and circulate in the CVOR (Cardiovascular Operating Room).
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week, typically 5 days of 8-hour shifts.
  • Shift pattern includes 2x12-hour and 2x8-hour shifts per week.
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2.
  • Weekend requirement: Two 24-hour calls per schedule.
  • On-call requirement: 2 calls per Monday-Friday week (either 7pm-11pm or 7pm-7am) with 1 day per week available to stay late.
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required.
  • Pending license accepted but must be active prior to start date.
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.
  • Guaranteed hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut.
  • Minimum 2 years of CVOR experience, with CVOR experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Certifications required:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Must be able to scrub cardiac surgery independently and circulate.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start; must be updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification and foreign equivalency evaluation (if applicable).
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually.
  • Immunizations and titers required or exemptions with proper documentation:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (highly preferred for certain specialties)
    • TB test or chest X-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) titers or vaccines
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or titer
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
    • COVID vaccination preferred

Additional Training and Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (must score 85%).
  • Color blind testing (required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER, ICU, Progressive Care, PACU, IR/Cath Lab, Endoscopy, GI units.
  • Various facility-specific training modules and attestations required, including but not limited to:
    • Stroke education (except pediatric specialties and NICU)
    • CLABSI prevention training
    • Pressure injury prevention
    • Language services training
    • CAUTI education
    • Patient transportation with oxygen
    • Suicide risk and environmental assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation training
    • Baxter pump interoperability
    • Patient bedside rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular assist device awareness
    • Blood administration module (annual update required)
    • New employee orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act module (for RNs except Home Health)
    • ED handbook (for ED/ER RNs)
    • eCart training module (not required for pediatric, periop/OR, outpatient, case managers, home health)
    • Chaperone policy training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)
  • EPIC testing or training may be required depending on prior experience.

References and Work History

  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU/CTICU assignments (charge nurse references not accepted).
  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days required.
  • Verification of last 7 years of employment required; attestations not accepted.

Schedule and Work Environment

  • 2x12-hour and 2x8-hour shifts per week.
  • Weekend and on-call requirements as noted.
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs.
  • Scrub color provided.
  • Parking cost approximately $125/month.

This position is ideal for experienced CVOR Registered Nurses who are comfortable independently scrubbing and circulating cardiac surgeries, able to meet on-call and weekend requirements, and willing to work a mix of 8- and 12-hour shifts in a high-acuity, Level I Trauma Center environment. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
