Registered Nurse (MedSurg/Tele Float Pool) - West Virginia
Location
- City: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit/Department
- MedSurg/Telemetry Float Pool
- Frequent float units: 6N (36 beds), 7N (29 beds), 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), Critical Care (20 beds)
- Nurses may assist with ED bed hold coverage and opening 7S as needed
- Float pool nurses typically assigned a "parent unit" and care for basic telemetry patients within their scope
Patient Ratios
- Generally 1:5-6 patients for both day and night shifts
- Occasionally up to 7 patients toward the end of a shift depending on acuity
Shifts & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7 AM - 7 PM and 7 PM - 7 AM
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) for both day and night shifts
- Holiday work included in permanent staff rotation schedule
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
Experience & Skills
- Must pass a cardiac rhythm exam (ACLS-trained RNs expected to pass)
- No prior ED experience required
- No requirement to titrate drips
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
- Float pool nurses will not titrate drips but must understand telemetry monitoring
Common Patient Diagnoses
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Cardiac catheterization patients
- Chest pain
- Pneumonia
- Chronic renal disease
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Orthopedics
- Oncology (permanent staff administer chemotherapy)
Nursing Support
- Charge nurse available on every unit (day charge nurse does not take patients; night charge nurse does)
- CNAs are used on all units
Respiratory Equipment
- CPAP and BiPAP available; respiratory therapists manage these
- Nurses are not expected to manage respiratory equipment or administer respiratory treatments
Telemetry
- Telemetry monitors used (Phillips brand)
- Monitor techs available on most units
- RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
Additional Information
- No false nails allowed
- Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule and provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license upon submission
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs for RNs
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS and ACLS certifications
- Ability to pass cardiac rhythm exam
- Experience with telemetry patient care and rhythm interpretation
