Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PICU
Location: Newark, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Primary unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Floating assignments to Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) may be required, based on hospital needs and skill set
- Patient ratio approximately 1:2 or higher (to be confirmed)
- Unit size: 19 beds
- Charting system: EPIC
- Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
- First-time travelers are not accepted
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of PICU critical care experience
- At least 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
Required Skills & Competencies
- Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring
- Proficient in BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies
- Ability to float to other units as needed
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in New Jersey
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification required
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification preferred
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit assignment (confirm with coordinator)
- IV Certification required for all RNs except those in OR specialties
Additional Requirements
- Must have prior travel experience; first-time travelers are not accepted
- 2 professional references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
- Skills checklist must be completed and updated annually
- Work history verification required for at least 1 year prior to start date (New Jersey state mandate)
- Must comply with all background checks and drug screening requirements
- Required to complete pass/fail competency exams including medication and EKG/dysrhythmia exams
- Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start (on-site fit testing mandatory)
- Annual influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Must complete facility-specific floating policy acknowledgment for each new assignment
- Must complete annual education sign-off prior to start and yearly thereafter
Health & Safety Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
- Physical exam within the last 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
- Drug screen within 30 days of start
- Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
- Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable
- Respiratory safety clearance and fit testing mandatory
Orientation & Training
- Must complete facility-required orientation including safety manual acknowledgment
- Required to complete pass/fail testing for EKG and medication competency within 72 hours of signing contract
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required if assigned to ER, Pediatric ER, or Behavioral Health units (includes online and in-person portions)

- Candidate must bring all required documentation to orientation
- Floating assignments depend on traveler’s skill set and hospital needs; confirm floating assignments with recruiter
- Scrub color for this assignment is navy blue
- This position requires a high level of critical care expertise and prior travel nursing experience
