Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU/Neuro Stepdown
Location: Durham, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Role: Registered Nurse in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Neuro Stepdown
- Targeted Start Date: May 4
- Floating: May float to Med/Surg, Neuro, Stepdown, PCU units
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Blocked Scheduling: Not available
- On-Call: Not required
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
- Local Candidates: Accepted (within 75 miles)
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of recent nursing experience, including at least 2 years in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) settings
- PCU experience within the last year, with specific Neuro PCU experience preferred
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse license in North Carolina or Compact License
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Additional Requirements
- Flu vaccine is mandatory; no exemptions or declinations accepted
- Scrub color: Royal Blue
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation sessions held bi-weekly
Background & Compliance Checks
- Background check within 90 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide searches
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 90 days of start
- Education verification required
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen (including THC) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years, no exemptions)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccination or immunity documentation
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
- Varicella vaccination or immunity documentation
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions)
- Polio vaccine or attestation
Documentation & Compliance
- Two professional references required from employment within the last 12 months (one must be a supervisor)
- Employment application and skills checklist must be completed and updated annually
- Competency exam and unit-specific competency checklist required
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card training provided if not already held
- Color blind testing required only for phlebotomists (not applicable here)
- Must set up a guest account prior to clearance for access to orientation and work systems
Notes
- Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file
- Candidates must complete all required online modules prior to orientation
- Testing for EKG/medication knowledge administered on the first day of orientation (pass/fail)
This position is suitable for nurses with at least 2 years of recent experience, preferably with neuro or strong med/surg skills, who are comfortable working in a stepdown/PCU environment and meet all licensure and certification requirements. Flu vaccination and other health compliance are strictly enforced.
