Description

Registered Nurse - Telemetry

Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit and Patient Care Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Telemetry
  • Beds:
    • 2nd Floor: 20 private rooms (planned to become Stepdown unit with higher acuity patients)
    • 6th Floor: 22 beds (mix of private and semi-private), remains Telemetry acuity
  • Patient Acuity: Primarily Telemetry level; Stepdown acuity expected on 2nd floor in future
  • Common Diagnoses/Patient Types:
    • Elevated troponin, NSTEMI, post-STEMI recovery (post-ICU)
    • Pre/post cardiac catheterization (with or without intervention)
    • Pacemakers, oncology patients (if unit is full)
    • Peritoneal dialysis (training provided)
    • Occasional post-surgical patients (hip or cardiac issues)
    • No titration drips, no DKA, no ventilated patients

Shift and Scheduling

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) for both day and night
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Nights: Fri/Sat; Days: Sat/Sun)
  • Holidays: Travelers may be scheduled on holidays based on unit needs
  • Scheduling: Requests entered via Kronos, approved 2 weeks in advance, block scheduling possible
  • Floating: Rare, but may float to ICU for overflow or Ortho/MedSurg

Staffing and Ratios

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5 for both day and night shifts
  • Charge Nurse: May float between floors or be assigned per floor; charge nurses take full patient assignments
  • Nurse Aides: Typically 3 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per floor when fully staffed; sometimes only 1 per floor

Certifications and Licenses

  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - AHA
  • First-time travelers are accepted

Clinical and Equipment Information

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC
  • Telemetry Monitors: Phillips Cardiac Monitors with central monitoring station; data integrated into EPIC
  • Cardiac Monitoring: Nurses read telemetry strips every 4 hours and document rhythm and review in patient chart
  • Drips Managed: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Labetalol, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin, Integrilin (per protocol), Nitro (set rate only)
  • Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
  • Respiratory Therapy: RT available 24/7 in-house
  • Pharmacy: In-house 24/7 with Omnicell on unit during the day
  • IV Team: None

Orientation and Training

  • Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 days depending on experience
  • Opportunities for precepting and charge nurse roles available

Additional Information

  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Fully vaccinated required (2 Moderna/Pfizer or 1 J&J); medical or religious exemptions require approval
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs or white jacket; undershirt white or navy; natural hair color required; tattoos must be covered if deemed distasteful
  • Background checks: Must disclose any background hits at time of submission
  • Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license appropriate for West Virginia
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Experience: Minimum 14 months (1+ year) in Telemetry nursing (based on specialty "Tele - 14")
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

This position offers a challenging Telemetry nursing role with a focus on cardiac and progressive care patients, supported by a multidisciplinary team and advanced monitoring technology.
