Description

Registered Nurse - PCU (Stepdown/PCU RN)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week (12 hours each, 18:45–07:15)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
Schedule Flexibility: Able to accommodate 4x12 shifts if preferred; block schedule possible upon discussion with manager
Floating: May float within scope as needed
Local Candidates: Accepted with no radius restrictions
Return to Office Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days


Job Description

  • Work setting experience required in Telemetry, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units
  • Patient ratios/daily caseload details not specified
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted (minimum 1 year specialty experience required)
  • No on-call requirement

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Stepdown
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular care including:
    • Post cardiac angiogram
    • Post myocardial infarction (MI)
    • Pre/post cardiac catheterization (cath)
    • Pre/post cardiac surgery
    • Sheath removal
    • TR band management
  • Renal care including pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure care
  • IV therapy and vascular access skills including:
    • Accessing ports
    • Arterial line management
    • Central line and PICC line care/management
    • Starting IVs
  • Medication management including heparin protocols
  • Neurological and neurosurgical care including:
    • Craniotomy
    • Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
    • Pre/post neurosurgery
    • Spinal cord injury
    • Traumatic brain injury
  • Orthopedic care including ortho trauma and total joint replacements
  • Plastic surgery care including skin grafts and surgical drains
  • Respiratory care including care of ventilated patients
  • Strong telemetry and critical care skills

Required Documents & Compliance

  • Valid US Driver’s License or State ID
  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and FACIS Level 3
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
  • Education verification (degree/transcript)
  • Fingerprinting completed in Illinois 3 business days prior to start (for clinical candidates without IL license)
  • State-specific searches including Illinois Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and Violent Offender registries within 30 days of start
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo (color, mid-shoulders up, plain background) due before start
  • Signed code of conduct and parking permit form (if applicable)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate provider, confirming good health and ability to perform job functions
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • TB questionnaire updated annually
  • Immunizations or documented immunity/declination for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30

  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking: Permit required, no cost
  • Guaranteed hours: Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay; cancellations beyond that will be billed
  • No prior travel experience required (first-timers not accepted)

This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown/PCU RNs with strong telemetry and critical care skills seeking a night shift travel contract in an acute care, Level I trauma, Magnet-designated hospital environment.
