Travel Registered Nurse – Stepdown Neuro Unit

Location: Portland, Oregon
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Neuro Stepdown (new unit opening 6/15)
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3
  • Floating: Yes, within Acute Care division
  • Weekend Requirement: Variable
  • Block Scheduling: Not guaranteed
  • Locals and first-time travelers accepted
  • Pending license accepted if application submitted and received by licensing board (qualifies for 90-day license exemption)

Patient Population & Care Focus

  • Diagnoses:
    • Ischemic Stroke
    • Hemorrhagic Stroke
    • Status Epilepticus
    • Post-Craniotomy / Neurosurgery
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details: Post-Thrombolytic Care
  • Special Equipment:
    • Stable Hamilton C1 Ventilators
    • External Ventricular Devices
    • Lumbar Drains
  • Skills Required:
    • Titration of vasoactive drips
    • Care of ventilated patients

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Oregon
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Must be completed within 6 months prior to start, including education and work history verification, international searches if applicable, and national sex offender search
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen including methamphetamines within 3 months prior to start; laboratory-based and SAMHSA certified
  • Physical Exam: Required per Aya Healthcare standards (within 1 year of start)
  • Fit Mask Testing: Required within 1 year prior to start; must be completed through Aya Healthcare (no onsite fit testing)
  • Immunizations & Health Screenings:
    • Tdap vaccine or signed declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months
    • TB questionnaire required
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination with declination if applicable
    • Hepatitis B vaccine series or immunity or signed declination
    • Varicella immunity or vaccination with declination if applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (deadline 12/01/2025)
  • References: Two manager or supervisor references from the last 24 months required (charge RN references not accepted unless direct supervisor)
  • Employment Application: Must include at least 7 years of work history with city and state for each position

Orientation & Training

  • Must complete facility-specific Compass modules prior to start to receive badge:
    • Information Privacy and Security Essentials
    • Integrity Foundations
    • Harassment Prevention Fundamentals
    • Glucometer 2026 (exemptions apply)
    • Omnicell Nurse Patient Care Training (exemptions apply)
    • Vocera Badge Training (required for inpatient RNs)
  • Medication Override Test provided for orientation (not required before start)
  • Professional Appearance Policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Coronavirus Protocol Attestation must be reviewed and signed

Additional Information

  • Facility Type: Short-Term Acute Care, Magnet, Teaching, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Parking: $16 daily pass required 8am-5pm; public transportation encouraged
  • Time Off (RTO) Restrictions:
    • Max 5 days approved for 13-week contracts; 7 days for 18-week contracts
    • Requests over 5 days require extension of contract length
    • All time off requests must be submitted upfront

This position is suitable for RNs with stepdown or progressive care experience seeking a night shift travel assignment in a neuro-focused acute care setting. First-time travelers and locals are welcome. Pending Oregon RN licenses are accepted under specific conditions.
