Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Portland, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Neuro Stepdown (New unit opening 6/15)
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 3 patients
  • Patient Diagnoses:
    • Ischemic Stroke
    • Hemorrhagic Stroke
    • Status Epilepticus
    • Post-Craniotomy / Neurosurgery
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details:
    • Post-Thrombolytic Care
  • Special Equipment:
    • Stable Hamilton C1 Ventilators
    • Vasoactive medication management
    • External Ventricular Devices
    • Lumbar Drains
  • Floating: Yes, within Acute Care division
  • Block Scheduling: Not guaranteed
  • Locals Accepted: Yes
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes (must submit application and qualify for 90-day license exemption)
  • Weekend Requirement: Variable
  • On-call: No

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oregon
  • Minimum 1 year of Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown or similar acute care settings, including Progressive Care Unit, Direct Observation Unit, Intermediate Care, or Stepdown experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Ability to titrate vasoactive drips
  • Experience caring for ventilated patients

Facility Information

  • Type: Short-Term Acute Care
  • Designation: Magnet, Teaching, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Parking: $16 daily pass (8 AM – 5 PM); public transportation encouraged
  • Scrub Color: Any color, no prints (provided)

Time Off (RTO) Policy

  • Maximum 5 RTO days approved for 13-week contracts
  • For approved RTO over 5 days, time off must be added to the end of the contract
  • All time off requests must be submitted upfront

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Background Checks: Must be completed within 6 months prior to start, including education and work history verification, international searches if applicable, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, sex offender search, and criminal history statement if applicable
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen including methamphetamines within 3 months prior to start; lab-based and SAMHSA certified
  • Health Documents:
    • Fit mask test within 1 year prior to start (N95 or equivalent)
    • Immunizations or signed declinations for Tdap, MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, and seasonal flu vaccine (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
    • TB questionnaire required
    • Physical exam per Aya Healthcare standards (within 1 year)
  • References: Two manager or supervisor references from the last 24 months required (exceptions apply for return candidates)
  • Employment Application: Must include at least 7 years of work history with city and state for each position
  • Competency Exams: Required with a passing score of 85% or higher
  • Facility-Specific Training: Completion of required online modules prior to start (Compass modules including privacy, harassment prevention, and others as applicable)
  • Professional Appearance Policy: Must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • COVID-19 Protocol: Candidate must review and sign coronavirus protocol attestation

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • No prior travel experience required
  • Must be fully available for compliance needs up until start date
  • Floating may be required within the acute care division
  • Facility provides scrub tops (any color, no prints)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro stepdown unit with complex neurological patients in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
