ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Canton, Ohio
Position Summary
Provide high-acuity, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill adult patients in a fast-paced Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, ensuring safety, clinical excellence, and compassionate family-centered support.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, interpret clinical changes, and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
- Manage and monitor critically ill patients, including hemodynamic monitoring, ventilators, titratable infusions, and invasive lines/drains as allowed.
- Administer medications and blood products per policy, verifying high-alert medications and infusion settings with independent double checks.
- Implement orders, care pathways, and bundles (e.g., sepsis, VAP, CLABSI prevention) and document accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Coordinate care with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and ancillary services; participate in rounds and handoffs using standardized communication tools.
- Provide patient and family education, support, and advocacy, including end-of-life care when applicable.
- Maintain competency with emergency response (code blue/rapid response), critical equipment, and infection prevention standards.
Work Schedule
- Day shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
- Total hours per week: 36
Contract Length
- Approximately 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum of 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Preferred Qualifications
- CCRN certification.
- Experience with ventilator management, vasoactive drips, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and/or post-operative critical care.
- Familiarity with EPIC or similar electronic health record systems.
Physical and Other Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to assist with patient handling and emergency procedures.
- Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and adherence to patient privacy and safety standards.
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license) must be carried on assignment.
- Background check including FCRA-compliant 7-year search, education verification, and fingerprinting (FBI and BCI) completed within 12 months and updated annually.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming ability to safely perform job functions.
- Fit mask test (N95) within 12 months and updated annually.
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tdap vaccine every 10 years (no declinations accepted).
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per protocol.
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination or positive titer with boosters if needed.
- Hepatitis B vaccination/titer or approved declination.
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer with booster if needed.
- Annual flu vaccination (no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval).
- Drug screening: Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months, updated annually (instant drug screens not accepted).
- Eye exam (Snellen) within 1 year of start.
- References: Two professional references from employment within the past year (manager, supervisor, charge nurse, or director).
- Employment application including at least 3 years prior work history with 2 years in acute care in a similar area.
- Completion of facility-specific onboarding modules prior to start (must be done on a computer using Google Chrome).
Additional Notes
- Fingerprinting must be completed within 48 hours of contract signing; facility will conduct their own fingerprinting in addition to agency process.
- Candidates may start with fingerprint results pending if fingerprinting is completed prior to start.
- Baseline competency exams (medication administration and ECG interpretation) required during orientation unless candidate is a legacy or agency flip with less than 6 months gap.
- Candidates must complete all onboarding modules prior to clearance to start; modules cannot be completed on a phone and require watching training videos before testing.
- Facility accommodates latex allergies with notification.
- Candidates must maintain legal name consistency across all documentation.
