Travel Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work on a Step Down (SD) unit with a team nursing model (two nurses + PCT caring for a group of patients).
- Patient population includes COPD, CHF, Pneumonia, Flu, Sepsis, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, and Post-COVID.
- Care involves Telemetry, drips, vents, trachs, bipaps, and high oxygen requirements (no orally intubated patients).
- Target patient ratios typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6.
- Shift: Night, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Overtime paid after 48 hours worked.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio.
- Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Ventilator (vent) experience.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Floating and Other Requirements
- Floating to other specialty clusters or nearby campuses (within 15 miles) may be required.
- Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts due to low census with notice.
- No employee incentives available for travelers.
Orientation and Documentation Requirements
- Request time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer.
- Application must include current Nursys report and proof of licensure.
Compliance and Background Checks
- 7-year criminal background check required, including SSN trace, national and county checks, and sex offender registry.
- E-Verify and I-9 documentation required.
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months.
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for duty.
- Annual health questionnaire and medical clearance for respiratory protection required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- Various immunizations or proof of immunity required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination).
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray required; annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
- NIH Stroke Certification required within 12 months prior to start and updated annually (exceptions apply).
Certifications and Competencies
- BLS and ACLS (AHA only) required and must be current at start.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year or must be passed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max).
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam within 2 years.
- Unit-specific competency exam within 2 years.
- Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year, renewed annually.
Uniform
- Navy blue scrubs required.
References and Work History
- Two professional references required within 2 years; one must be a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse.
- Current resume/application required.
- Work history verification required only if references are not available.
