Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: South Bend, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Unit: 7th Floor Intermediate Care (Step Down)
- Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), 3 shifts per week, 36 hours guaranteed
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
- Floating: May float to like or lesser acuity units within scope
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within the last year
- Telemetry experience
- Stroke experience
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Experience & Requirements
- Prior travel experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)
- Must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility (locals not accepted)
Facility & Work Environment
- Type: Short Term Acute Care hospital
- Charting system: Cerner
- Scrub color: Royal Blue or White
- Parking: Free parking in designated outside lots for overnight shifts
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Background check covering last 7 years and all states lived/worked in, required within 90 days of start
- Education verification or copy of diploma/transcripts required
- Physical exam required (Aya Physician Statement form)
- Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cannabinoids, MDMA, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, cocaine, methadone, tramadol, benzodiazepines, morphine/opiate)
- TB screening: Negative 2-step PPD or Q-gold within 1 year (T-spot not accepted); if positive PPD, chest x-ray within past 12 months required
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Flu vaccine required prior to start or approved medical/religious exemption; documentation must be on file by December 15
- COVID vaccine exemption allowed with medical or religious documentation
Additional Requirements
- Completion of facility-specific modules (70-80 modules, approx. 8-10 hours) prior to start; paid time for completion
- Facility-specific confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement required before start
- Clear, passport-style photo for badge issuance required
- Must complete employment application prior to start
Special Notes
- This is a true cardiac floor; inability to identify cardiac rhythms can be detrimental to patient safety
- Candidates will encounter a variety of cardiac drips and renal patients
- Fit mask test preferred but not mandatory; if unavailable, note will be made and requirement removed
This position is ideal for experienced telemetry RNs with strong cardiac and stroke care skills seeking a night shift travel assignment in a short-term acute care setting.
