Registered Nurse - IMC (Stepdown/PCU)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)

  • Option to accommodate 4x12 shifts if preferred
  • Must work every other weekend

Job Summary

Provide nursing care in Intermediate Care (IMC) / Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) settings with a focus on telemetry and neuro stepdown patients. The role involves managing complex cardiac, neurological, respiratory, and post-surgical cases with a variety of specialized skills.


Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid RN license in Illinois
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Cardiovascular care including:
    • Post cardiac angiogram, MI, cardiac cath, cardiac surgery
    • Sheath removal, TR Band management
  • Renal care: Pre/Post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV therapy/phlebotomy: Accessing ports, arterial line management, central line care, PICC line management
  • Medication management: Heparin protocols, PCA, procedural sedation administration
  • Neurological/psychiatric cases: Craniotomy, CVA, pre/post neurosurgery, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury
  • Orthopedics: Ortho trauma, peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastic surgery: Skin grafts, surgical drains

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Illinois RN license required (no pending licenses accepted)
  • BLS and NIH Stroke Scale certification required
  • ACLS preferred (AHA or RQI acceptable)
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit/specialty (e.g., PALS if applicable)

Work Conditions & Additional Info

  • Floating within scope as needed
  • No on-call requirement
  • Locals accepted with no radius restrictions
  • Return to office (RTO) ideally no more than 5 days
  • Guaranteed hours with some allowance for client call-offs
  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking permit required (no cost)

Required Pre-Employment & Ongoing Documentation

  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions lists
  • State-specific searches including Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and Violent Offender registries (Illinois) within 30 days of start
  • Primary source verification of license and certifications (e.g., NURSYS for RN)
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs and documentation of good physical and mental health
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
  • Badge photo required prior to start
  • Completion of facility-specific documents including code of conduct and parking permit forms

References & Skills Verification

  • Two professional references required for all direct travel, allied, per diem, and acute care clinical candidates
  • Skills checklist required for all clinical and allied candidates

This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown/PCU RNs with strong telemetry and critical care skills seeking a night shift travel contract in an acute care, Level I trauma, Magnet-designated hospital setting.
