Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Pediatric Stepdown nursing position on night shift
  • Weekend work required every other weekend
  • Orientation sessions held bi-weekly
  • Local candidates within 75 miles considered

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Pediatric PCU (Progressive Care Unit) experience within the last year
  • Experience in Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • I9 or Attestation
  • Valid Driver’s License or Government-issued Photo ID
  • Social Security Card (only if used for I9)
  • Background Check (within 90 days of start) including:
    • SSN Trace, Counties lived/worked/schooled in last 7 years
    • Alias searches, Nationwide, Sex Offender, International (if applicable)
    • Education Verification (if applicable)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (within 90 days)
  • OFAC Sanctions List Search (within 30 days)
  • Physical Exam (within 12 months)
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray (within 12 months; chest x-rays valid 2 years)
  • TB Questionnaire (updated annually)
  • Immunizations/Vaccines:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years, no exemptions)
    • Measles (2 vaccines or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Mumps (2 vaccines or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Rubella (1 vaccine or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal)
    • Polio vaccine or signed attestation
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine (required for 2025-26 season; no exemptions)
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel (including THC) within 30 days of start; instant tests not accepted
  • Two professional references from employment within last 12 months (at least one supervisor)
  • Employment Application with 7 years of work history
  • Annual Skills Checklist update required

Additional Requirements

  • Duke Guest Account setup prior to clearance for access to orientation and work systems
  • Competency Exam and Unit-Specific Competency Checklist (CBO) to be completed within 3 weeks after start
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) administered at orientation (except Hospice RNs, Medical Assistants, and RRTs)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) Blue Card may be required depending on unit; training provided if not held
  • Color Blind Testing Online required for Phlebotomists (not disqualifying if failed)

Notes

  • Candidates must be cleared with all required documentation and background checks before starting
  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments may have some document requirements waived or accepted on file
  • Orientation and onboarding details will be provided prior to start date
  • Weekend work is mandatory every other weekend on this assignment
