Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Telemetry Float

Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Assignment Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, primarily nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours: Minimum 36 hours per week, preference for up to 48 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
Holiday Requirement: Included in holiday rotation with permanent staff

Unit and Patient Population

• Float between 7 telemetry units, most frequently assigned to 6N and 7N (29 beds)
• Patient types include: CHF, cardiac cath/post-cath, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic, oncology (chemo administered by oncology RNs)
• Telemetry patients are basic level; no arterial lines or sheath pulls
• Possible float to Critical Care only if RN has critical care experience
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • MedSurg/Telemetry: 1:5-6 (depending on acuity)
  • PCU: 1:4
• Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) available, typically 1 PCA per 12 patients

Required Qualifications

• Current RN license
• BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Must be able to titrate drips including cardiac drips such as Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Heparin, Nitro (up to 50 mcg), Lasix, Ativan
• Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors used)
• Experience with telemetry and MedSurg patients required
• Critical care experience required only if floating to ICU
• No false nails allowed

Skills and Experience

• Must be comfortable titrating drips and managing cardiac telemetry patients
• Experience with respiratory support equipment limited to CPAP and BiPAP (RT manages these)
• Charge nurse available 24/7; day shift charge nurse does not take patient assignments, night shift charge nurse does
• Use of Kronos system for clocking in/out

Scheduling and Work Environment

• 12-hour shifts, 7 AM – 7:30 PM or 7 PM – 7 AM
• Weekend shifts scheduled every other weekend
• Holiday shifts integrated into permanent staff rotation
• Dress code: Royal blue scrubs for RNs
• Telemetry techs not specified; RNs responsible for strip interpretation
