Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – 3N Cardiac Telemetry Unit
Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Unit: 3N - Cardiac Telemetry (43 beds; semi-private with 9-10 private rooms)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for travelers (permanent staff every 3rd weekend)
Holiday Requirement: Travelers may be required to work holidays if unit needs demand it
Scheduling: Self-scheduling allowed; block scheduling accommodated if unit needs are met
Unit Overview
- Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)
- Patient types: Post heart catheterization, TR Bands, congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), post pacemaker (no external pacers), medical management or awaiting CABG consult, arrhythmias
- Monitor techs present; RN’s must be able to read cardiac strips and interpret telemetry
- RN responsibilities include admissions and discharges (8-12 per day), with encouragement to ask for help if behind
- Teamwork is emphasized in a fast-paced environment
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current BLS (AHA)
- Current ACLS (AHA)
- Valid driver’s license (unexpired copy required with submission)
Experience & Skills
- Must be comfortable caring for cardiac telemetry patients and able to read cardiac strips
- Experience with titrating drips limited to Heparin (Cardizem and Amiodarone are not titrated; occasional titration of Lasix or Bumex)
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
Clinical & Unit Details
- RN titrates only Heparin drips
- RT support available for occasional High Flow, BiPAP, and CPAP (supportive therapy only; patients dependent on these are typically transferred to higher acuity units)
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) assist with ADLs, fingerstick blood sugars, and EKGs when able; RNs must be able to perform EKGs if PCTs are unavailable
- Charge nurse coverage 24/7; night charge always takes patient assignment; travelers may be asked to take charge if comfortable
Orientation & Training
- 1 day computer training
- 1 day floor shadowing with preceptor
- 3rd day working independently
Additional Information
- Travelers participate in float rotation within the hospital, including ICU (rare) and stepdown units, only with patients within their skillset
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs; scrub jackets allowed but no hoodies or sweatshirts
- Unit is accustomed to new graduates and provides teaching support
