Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse
Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Position in a Level I Trauma Center with a 21-bed critical care float pool.
- Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week).
- Float between Neuro/Trauma ICU, Medical ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and may float to nearby sister facilities (up to ~10 miles away).
- Patient ratios: ICU units up to 1:3, Progressive Care up to 1:4.
- Charting system: Epic.
- Scrub color: Navy Blue.
- Wide range of critical care diagnoses encountered.
- Weekend work required every other weekend, subject to unit needs.
- No on-call requirement.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Colorado.
- Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Prior float experience in critical care settings.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID (clear copies front and back).
- E-Verify or attestation documentation.
- Proof of legal name change if applicable.
- Background checks within 60 days of start, including:
- 7-year background check with SSN trace, Colorado state checks, education verification (accredited nursing school), sex offender search, OFAC sanctions list.
- Employment application and verification of last 3 years of work history with explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Two professional references from the last two years, including one from the past year, preferably from a Charge RN, Manager, or Supervisor.
- Colorado CAPS check results within 60 days of start.
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, DO, NP, or PA.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start and annually (specific approved masks required).
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or signed declination.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire annually if positive.
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity via titer or vaccination.
- Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination series or declination.
- Varicella immunity or vaccination.
- COVID-19 vaccination proof or signed declination (acceptable vaccines: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna).
- Drug testing within 30 days of start and annually (specific drug panel required).
- Color blindness testing via Ishihara exam (online testing not accepted for new candidates).
Competency Requirements (Must be current within 1 year and updated annually)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ICU and related units).
- Core competency exams Part I, II, and III.
- OSHA mandatory training.
Additional Information
- Facility-specific new employee orientation modules must be completed within the first two weeks of assignment.
- Candidates may be floated to other critical care units or sister facilities as needed, including some up to approximately 10 miles away.
- Candidates must confirm renewal plans for any certifications expiring within 90 days of assignment start to avoid clearance issues.
This position is ideal for experienced critical care nurses with prior travel assignments who are comfortable working night shifts and floating across multiple ICU and progressive care units in a trauma center setting.
