Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Level 8
Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour rotating shifts (Day/Night)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Bed Count: 48 beds
Unit & Patient Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:5-7
- Nights: 1:6-8
- Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, Altered Mental Status (AMS), GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
- Charge Nurse coverage:
- Day shift: 2 charge nurses, both take patient assignments
- Night shift: Usually 2 charge nurses; if only 1, they do not take patient assignments
- Patient Care Tech (PCT) ratio: Approximately 1:10-12 (may be higher)
- PCT duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license
- BLS certification
- Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience
- First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)
- Must include a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission
- Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN drip titration: Yes, except no cardiac drip titration
- Common drips: Heparin, Bumex, Lasix
- Respiratory therapy equipment:
- RTs manage breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow oxygen
- RNs monitor respiratory equipment but do not administer treatments
- Telemetry monitoring:
- Telemetry techs monitor and interpret strips remotely
- RNs are not required to read or interpret telemetry strips
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Schedule created by manager; no self-scheduling or block scheduling
- Rotating shifts typically scheduled as 2 weeks days followed by 2 weeks nights (no mixing days and nights in the same week)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: May be included in holiday rotation for RNs
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating: May float to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation:
- 1 day with educator/computer system training
- 1 day preceptor-led orientation
Dress Code
- RN scrubs: Navy blue
- PCT scrubs: Ceil blue
- Secretaries: Black and pink
Additional Notes
- 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
- Flexibility expected to help fill gaps in permanent schedule
