Medical Surgical - Neuro Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Decatur, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM – 6:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Job Summary
- Acute care hospital setting with an average daily census of 32 patients
- Level II Trauma center with 372 staffed beds
- Work every other weekend required
- Floating within scope as needed to meet facility needs
- Locals accepted with no radius restrictions
- Block schedule requests can be discussed with manager
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Certifications required:
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Experience with Cerner electronic charting system
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- PICC line management
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- CPAP/BiPAP
- Portable oxygen tank management
- Tracheostomy management
- Continuous bladder irrigation experience
Clinical Skills & Experience Requirements
- Med/Surg Experience: Required
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry remote monitoring, use of Rapid Response Teams
- Gastrointestinal Care: Colostomy care, feeding tube care and management
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Accessing ports, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, starting IVs
- Medications: Heparin, insulin, PCA (patient-controlled analgesia)
- Neurological/Psychiatric: Care for CVA, pre/post neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury
- Surgical: Experience with surgical drains
- Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, pre/post thoracic surgery, tracheostomy management
- Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac, continuous bladder irrigation
Work Environment & Additional Information
- Scrub color: Royal blue
- Parking permit required but no cost
- No on-call requirement
- Return to office (RTO) restrictions ideally no more than 5 days
- Guaranteed hours with possible client call-offs up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay for cancelled hours
Required Pre-Employment & Ongoing Documentation
- Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually
- State-specific criminal and offender registry searches required within 30 days of start
- Primary source verification of licenses and certifications (including NURSYS for RN)
- Competency exam required for clinical candidates
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by an appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good physical and mental health and ability to perform job functions
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
- Immunizations or documented immunity required for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
- Badge photo required within one week of contract signing
- Code of conduct acknowledgment required within 7 days of contract signing
- Parking permit form required within 7 days of contract signing (if applicable)
- References: 2 professional references required for travel acute care clinical candidates
- Skills checklist required for clinical candidates

Summary
This is a travel Registered Nurse position specializing in Medical Surgical Neurology in an acute care, Level II trauma hospital. The role requires a minimum of 2 years Med/Surg experience, active Illinois RN licensure, and specific certifications including BLS and NIHSS. The nurse will work 3 twelve-hour day shifts per week with every other weekend required, floating as needed. Strong clinical skills across multiple specialties including cardiac telemetry, neurological care, respiratory management, and IV therapy are essential. The facility uses Cerner for charting and prefers candidates with teaching hospital experience. Comprehensive pre-employment health and background screenings are mandatory.
