Job Description

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) assists the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures by preparing the operating suite, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and policies. Responsibilities include:

• Preparing rooms with all necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each surgical procedure.
• Assisting in positioning, prepping, and draping patients across all age groups (neonate to geriatric).
• Performing and documenting accurate operating room counts of instruments, sponges, and needles.
• Maintaining aseptic technique and medical/surgical asepsis during procedures.
• Passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon and anticipating their needs during surgery.
• Cleaning, sterilizing, and caring for surgical instruments and scopes, including steam sterilization and monitoring.
• Collaborating with nursing staff to maintain equipment and supplies.
• Supporting a culture of safety and quality in patient care.
• Completing documentation according to standards and policies.
• Working in sterile processing as assigned.
• Maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and addressing psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.

Shift

• Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM
• Longer hours on Orthopedic and Spine surgery days
• Call every 5th weekend and 2-3 days during the week

Physical Demands

• Frequent use of hands and arms; sitting, standing, and walking regularly.
• Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, or balancing.
• Frequent lifting/moving up to 40 pounds; occasional lifting/moving over 100 pounds.
• Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock risk.
• Occasional exposure to explosive, toxic, or caustic chemicals.
• Bloodborne pathogen exposure classified as high risk.
• Moderate noise level.

Required Education & Certifications

• High school diploma or GED or completion of a surgical technology program
• Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Required Qualifications

• Surgical Technologist with at least 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
• Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• High school diploma or GED or completion of a surgical technology program

Additional Certifications (Preferred)

• ACLS
• PALS
• NRP
• ATT

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Reports to the Supervisor of Surgical Services

No prior travel experience required.
