Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1-2 (may vary if floated).
  • Patient population includes fresh heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR), ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
  • Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, Emergency Department (ED) for ICU holding patients, and Intermediate Care (IMC) units.
  • Experience with devices such as Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax is mandatory, or experience with fresh heart cases.
  • Required skills include post-op open heart recovery, Swan-Ganz catheter, Flotrack, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.
  • May consider Surgical ICU (SICU) experience with initial CVICU training.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey.
  • Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • IV Certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Schedule and Time Off

  • Every other weekend and holiday required as applicable.
  • All time off or schedule accommodations must be approved prior to offer.

Additional Requirements and Information

  • First-time travelers are accepted; prior travel experience is not required.
  • Locals are accepted.
  • Must complete annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation materials prior to start.
  • Must complete and maintain required CEUs including stroke and trauma CEUs as applicable.
  • Must complete pass/fail testing for EKG and medication exams; failure after 3 attempts results in cancellation.
  • Color vision testing required if job tasks involve color discrimination.
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire required if applicable.
  • Must comply with all health document requirements including immunizations and titers for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, hepatitis B, tetanus/diphtheria/Tdap, and others as specified.
  • Must complete Respiratory Safety clearance through designated system prior to start.
  • Must complete required certifications and training such as IV certification (except OR specialties).
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required only if assigned to ER, Pediatric ER, or Behavioral Health units (not applicable here).

Patient Care Environment

  • Care for complex cardiac surgery patients requiring advanced monitoring and support.
  • Exposure to critical care equipment and technology including mechanical circulatory support devices and continuous renal replacement therapy.
