Description

Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48


Unit Overview

  • High acuity, fast-paced step-down unit
  • Patient population includes DKA, GI bleed, COPD, Pneumonia, Stroke, Sepsis, Urology complications
  • Average daily census: 31 patients
  • Targeted nurse-to-patient ratio: typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6
  • Requires excellent critical thinking, time management, and cardiac monitor interpretation skills
  • Experience managing ventilators, tracheostomies, chest tubes, drains, cardiac drips, and NIH Stroke Certification required
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with at least 1 year of recent PCU experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Floating and Assignment Details

  • Traveler will float as needed within specialty clusters at employer’s discretion
  • Possible floating between main campus and nearby campuses within 15 miles
  • Assignments may include high-risk respiratory unit or COVID support
  • Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts with notice (up to 3 shifts for 13-week contract)
  • Travelers are not eligible for employer employee incentives

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: must be passed within 1 year prior to start or completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 2 years of start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required within 2 years prior to start
  • Color blind testing required only for lab units (not applicable here)

Health and Background Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Physical exam within 2 years, indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray required; annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Required vaccinations or immunity documentation: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Drug screening: 9 or 10 panel negative drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to start; lab confirmation required for positives
  • Respiratory safety clearance required within 1 year prior to start and renewed annually
  • Medical questionnaire for respiratory protection must be submitted prior to orientation

Documentation and Verification

  • Current resume/application required
  • Two professional references within 2 years required (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse); employment verification accepted if references unavailable
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date
  • Ohio licensure primary source verification required via NURSYS
  • Candidate agreement form must be fully completed prior to documentation due date

Additional Notes

  • Overtime paid after 48 hours worked in a 48-hour contract
  • Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
  • RTO approval at manager’s discretion

This position is ideal for experienced registered nurses with strong critical care and telemetry skills, ventilator experience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity step-down unit on night shifts.
