Registered Nurse (RN) – Stepdown Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Unit Overview

• Stepdown/MedSurg unit with 29 beds (unit currently under construction; opening expected in Q1 2026)
• Flex unit serving both floor and stepdown patients based on hospital needs
• Diverse patient population primarily with medical diagnoses
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Stepdown: 3:1
  • MedSurg floor: 6:1
• Nurse aids (Clinical Associates) present with a goal ratio of 1:10 (3 CAs per shift)
• Remote telemetry surveillance center with central monitoring; RNs are not required to read their own telemetry strips
• Telemetry monitoring equipment by Phillips

Required Qualifications

• Current RN license
• BLS (AHA) certification required
• Must have EPIC electronic medical record experience
• Ability to manage:

  • 3 patients in stepdown
  • 6 patients in med-surg
• Experience with titrating drips as per physician orders, including:

  • Heparin, insulin, antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics
  • Phenobarbitol, ketamine
  • PCA opioids (morphine, dilaudid, fentanyl)
  • TPN (total parenteral nutrition)

Clinical Equipment & Patient Care

• CPAP and BiPAP used on both floor and stepdown
• High flow oxygen and ventilators used in stepdown; ventilator settings adjusted by ICU staff
• Charge nurses and house supervisors available 24/7; charge nurses may take patient assignments initially but goal is to have a free charge RN

Scheduling & Work Environment

• 12-hour night shifts
• Block scheduling is attempted but not guaranteed
• Weekend shifts required (agency RN positions posted as weekend positions)
• Expect to work about half of recognized holidays
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating to other floor or stepdown units expected
• Dress code: royal blue and white scrubs

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation scheduled Friday through Sunday, 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
