Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse
Location: Jefferson, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit providing care for both mother and baby.
- Unit handles approximately 100 births annually; not very busy but includes higher acuity/high-risk cases.
- Autonomy and strong clinical experience required due to the small size and acuity of the unit.
- Patient care ratios range from 1:1 to 1:2.
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM), scheduled for either 36 or 48 hours per week.
- Float requirement: Must be willing to float to MedSurg, CNA duties, secretary, and/or helping hands as needed.
- Weekend work is determined by department needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Proficient in fetal heart monitoring
Systems and Equipment
- Documentation and medication systems used: Centricity, Meditech Magic.
Compliance and Onboarding Requirements
- Background checks including local, federal, and national criminal databases, education verification, and other standard screenings required.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
- Fit testing for N95 mask required; PAPR training not accepted in lieu of N95 at this facility.
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (no specific timeframe)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if needed (declinations not accepted)
- Hepatitis B titer or series; if negative/equivocal, must sign facility-specific declination.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (starting 9/1, deadline 10/31). Exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.
Orientation and Training
- Manager schedules shifts and orientation.
- Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and annual compliance training.
- Competency exams as applicable, including medication/pharmacology competency.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam not required for Labor and Delivery specialty.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist if applicable.
Additional Notes
- Scrubs color: Navy Blue.
- Professional references required per agency standards (2 professional references within 3 years for travel nurses).
- Badge photo required immediately after signing contract; must meet specific photo criteria (passport style, white background, holding paper with full name).
- Candidate must complete password registration and login to facility’s learning system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays.
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized Labor and Delivery unit with a supportive environment for first-time travel nurses and requires strong clinical skills and certifications in maternal and neonatal care.
