Job Opportunity: Certified Surgical First Assistant
Location: Norwalk, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
Specialty: Surgical Services
Shift: Day shift, 4 days a week, 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:15 PM)
Workdays: Monday through Friday
Call Requirements:
- Minimum two weekday call shifts per week (8 hours each), starting immediately after your shift ends.
- Weekend call required: one 24-hour weekend call per 4-week schedule (Saturday 7 AM to Sunday 7 AM or Sunday 7 AM to Monday 7 AM).
- At least one 24-hour holiday call required during the contract.
- Must be able to arrive at the hospital within 20 minutes for emergencies.
- For scheduled on-call cases, arrive 1 hour before case start time.
- Post-case responsibilities include supporting patient care in PACU and cleaning/setup of rooms and instruments.
- C-sections are on-call cases; staff must prepare and clean rooms accordingly.
Orientation:
- One week of hands-on orientation (4 or 5 days depending on shift length).
Required experience: Must have orthopedic robot experience.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a First Assist Technician, with experience within the last year.
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) national certification required.
- Must provide logs/reports showing surgical first assisting services to at least 50 patients in the past 12 months.
- If requesting robotic surgery assisting, must provide logs/reports of assisting with at least 10 patients in the past 12 months.
- Valid state license with primary source verification.
- Proof of 2 clinical references (hospital evaluations accepted).
- Employment application/resume including all employers for the past 3 years.
- Work history verification for the last 3 years (employers and hospital affiliations).
- Background checks:
- 7-year criminal background check updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
- Ohio BCI and FBI fingerprinting results within 12 months of start.
- Education verification required.
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable.
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement (HIPAA compliance).
- Orthopedic robot experience required.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (AHA or equivalent).
- Current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.
- Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification as applicable.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (AHA or equivalent).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) not required for CSFA.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) not required for CSFA.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) as required (typically for OB/Nursery, not CSFA).
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) not required for CSFA.
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands (initial and updated annually).
- Tdap vaccine within the last 10 years (no declinations accepted).
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year of start, updated annually with TB questionnaire.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccinations required; boosters required for low titers; declinations not accepted.
- Hepatitis B: Titer or vaccine series required; declinations not accepted.
- 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (instant acceptable).
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31); declinations not accepted except for approved medical or religious exemptions on facility forms.
- COVID vaccines preferred; if vaccinated, proof of vaccination record required.
- Facility OSHA Respirator Questionnaire must be completed online prior to start; fit testing completed onsite.
Additional Information
- Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID) required and must be carried during hours of service.
- Computer access and temp staff information forms must be completed prior to start.
- Facility-specific applications for first assist privileges must be completed.
- Must be able to work in main OR and OB-C section.
- Must be available for weekday, weekend, and holiday call as described.
This position requires a highly skilled Certified Surgical First Assistant with orthopedic robot experience, strong clinical references, and the ability to meet rigorous health and compliance standards. The role involves significant on-call responsibilities including emergency response and post-operative support.
