Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Seattle, Washington
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per week: 36


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in a Neuro ICU setting with a focus on patients requiring Level 1 trauma care.
  • Patient population includes neurosurgical and neurological conditions such as hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), aneurysms, vascular malformations, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), tumor removal, ischemic stroke (requiring tPA or thrombectomy), seizure disorders, and neuro infections.
  • Unit is a comprehensive accredited stroke unit.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2 for both day and night shifts.
  • Floating to other ICUs or boarders may be required within scope.
  • Weekend work required every other weekend.
  • First-time travelers may be considered if they have prior Level 1 trauma experience and a strong work history; seasoned travelers are auto-offered.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State.
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with external ventricular drains (EVD).
  • Experience with craniotomies and burr holes.
  • Proficiency in management of dysrhythmias, including telemetry monitoring and interpretation.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including nationwide, sex offender, and state-specific searches.
  • Education verification as applicable.
  • Drug screening within the past 12 months (instant acceptable).
  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start (not required by facility but required by agency).
  • Mask fit test within 12 months of start (specific mask models required).
  • Various health immunizations and titers required or declination forms accepted:
    • Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination)
    • Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Annual TB questionnaire and recent TB test (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD within 90 days)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (required during flu season)
    • COVID vaccination or declination (for tracking purposes)

Orientation and Testing

  • Orientation includes pass/fail testing with an 80% passing score required; failure results in cancellation.
  • Tests include basic knowledge, adult medication, pediatric medication (if applicable), and advanced dysrhythmia exam.
  • Candidates will receive a study guide for telemetry/dysrhythmia exam preparation.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start is mandatory.

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Professional badge photo required (waist up, clear lighting, simple background, no hats).
  • Must sign facility-specific documents including license acknowledgment, equipment safety, health history, policies and procedures, job description, PCIS agreement, personal data form, and code of conduct.
  • WA state multi-state licensed nurses must complete suicide prevention training and demographic attestation prior to starting.
  • Background packet including personal data form, national background check form, and other required documents must be completed prior to start.

Notes

  • Locals are accepted; no block scheduling accommodation.
  • Parking is available onsite and offsite with shuttle service during weekdays.
  • The unit uses Epic for charting with hard stops.
  • Magnet, teaching hospital, Level I trauma center.

This position is ideal for experienced neuro ICU nurses comfortable with telemetry monitoring and managing complex neurological patients in a high-acuity trauma setting.
