Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse
Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey

Job Description
- Work in Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) with a patient ratio of 1:1-2 (may vary if floated).
- Patient population includes fresh heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR), ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
- Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, Emergency Department (ED) for ICU holding patients, and Intermediate Care (IMC) units.
- Experience with devices such as Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax is mandatory, or experience with fresh heart cases.
- Required skills include Post-Op Open Heart Recovery, Swan-Ganz catheter, Flotrack, Temporary Pacemakers, Arterial Lines, and Chest Tubes.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey.
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) experience, with CVICU experience within the last year required.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- IV Certification.
Schedule and Time Off
- Every other weekend and holiday required as applicable.
- All time off or schedule accommodations must be approved prior to offer.
Documentation and Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license required within 48 hours of signing.
- Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-jurisdictional searches.
- Drug screen (10-panel urine) within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
- Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing mandatory prior to start; must be updated annually.
- Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
- Required immunizations and titers:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive IgG titers or vaccination proof)
- Varicella (positive IgG titer or vaccination proof)
- Hepatitis B immunity (positive surface antibody titer or vaccine compliance)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within past 10 years
- Color vision testing if job tasks require color discrimination.
- Completion of required competency exams including:
- Medication/Pharmacology
- Dysrhythmia/EKG
- IV Therapy/Infusion (except OR specialties)
- Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication exams with remediation policy.
- Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment required.
- Skills checklist updated annually.
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history.
- Two professional references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
- Work history verification per New Jersey state requirements.
Additional Certifications and Training
- IV Certification required for all RNs except OR specialties.
- NIH Stroke Certification required for adult critical care units.
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (includes online and in-person training).
- Chemotherapy certification not required for this role.
- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications not required for CVICU RN.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) not required.
Patient Care and Equipment Experience
- Must have experience with advanced cardiovascular support devices: Impella, IABP, CRRT (Prismax).
- Skilled in managing post-operative open heart patients and related invasive monitoring devices.
