Job Opportunity: ECMO Specialist (Registered Nurse)

Location: Greenville, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, working 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week (36 hours/week)
  • Weekend coverage every other weekend, subject to change based on need
  • Float between Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) and Pediatric ICU (PICU) units
  • Care for both pediatric and adult patients requiring ECMO support
  • Patient diagnoses include post-cardiac surgery, cardiogenic shock, traumatic injury, ARDS/respiratory failure, and other critical acute illnesses requiring ECMO
  • Manage ECMO devices during bedside cannulation and cannula repositioning procedures
  • Use specialized equipment including Cardiohelp ECMO console, CentriMag ECMO console, Cardio Quip heater-cooler unit, and point-of-care glucometer
  • Collaborate with ICU RNs and Respiratory Therapists, responsible specifically for ECMO device management following provider orders

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of ECMO ICU experience within the last year
  • Experience working with both pediatric and adult patients in critical care settings
  • Current certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License required immediately upon signing for computer access and must be carried on duty
  • Background check covering 7 years within 12 months of start date, including alias and multi-state/county searches
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Ongoing monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks during assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position
  • Drug screening within 1 year and updated annually (5-panel minimum)
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (if working in high-risk areas)
    • Negative TB test (True 2-step PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or Tspot within 90 days)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines (second vaccine can be pending if collected within 28 days)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (not required for remote workers)
  • Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation (N95 masks commonly used)
  • Badge photo meeting specific facility requirements

Orientation and Training

  • Completion of approximately 12 hours of mandatory online modules within 72 hours of assignment acceptance (required before start)
  • 16 hours of non-billable orientation onsite, including clinical precepted portion
  • Pass/fail testing in medication and arrhythmia exams required prior to start (two attempts allowed, 84% passing score)
  • Annual competency exams and training including Core Parts I, II, and III covering universal precautions, cultural diversity, pain management, OSHA blood-borne pathogens, and patient safety goals

Additional Certifications (as applicable)

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Advanced (if required)
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification (check unit requirements)
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) for applicable units
  • Other specialty certifications as required by unit or role

Experience and Skills

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
  • Must be comfortable managing complex ECMO devices and working in high-acuity ICU settings
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong critical thinking and patient management skills in both pediatric and adult populations
