Registered Nurse – PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Day shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Cardiac experience required
  • Must have experience working in Step-Down (SD) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a 1:5 patient ratio documented in work history (ICU experience does not count)
  • Target patient ratios typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6
  • Unit may use team nursing model partnering RNs, LPNs, and PCTs
  • Must have EPIC electronic health record experience
  • Work includes telemetry, drips, ABG draws, and cardiac procedures (catheterizations, ablations, pacers, ICDs)
  • Medications include Cardizem, Cardene, dobutamine, dopamine, heparin, nitro, and insulin drips
  • Navy blue scrubs required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Cardiac nursing experience
  • Experience drawing arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Competencies & Certifications

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start or must complete within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max, 80% passing score)
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam within 2 years of start
  • NIH Stroke Certification required within 12 months prior to start and updated annually (exceptions apply)
  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for duty
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (annual update if past positive TB)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 12 months prior to documentation due date (must include marijuana panel)
  • Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year of start, renewed annually

Floating and Other Requirements

  • Traveler will be first to float at employer’s discretion, including to specialty clusters or high-risk respiratory/COVID units
  • Floating may include multiple nearby campuses within 10-15 miles
  • Employer reserves right to cancel up to 2 shifts per 13-week contract due to low census
  • Contract cancellation possible with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty
  • Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives

Documentation & Onboarding Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • E-Verify and I-9 compliance required prior to start
  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start
  • Education verification required for all non-RN candidates (not applicable here)
  • Current resume/application required
  • Two professional references within 2 years required (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge RN) or 1-year work history verification if references unavailable
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to start
  • Medical questionnaire for respiratory protection must be submitted prior to orientation
  • Candidate agreement form must be fully completed prior to documentation due date

Additional Notes

  • Request time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
  • RTO approval at manager’s discretion
  • Certifications expiring within one week of start date must be renewed before start
  • Non-AHA certifications accepted only as placeholders while AHA certification is pending completion

This position is ideal for experienced PCU/Step-Down RNs with cardiac and telemetry skills, EPIC proficiency, and flexibility to float across units. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
